The first Soviet night all-weather interceptor, it constituted, along with MiG-19, Tu-16 and Il-28, the core of Soviet Air Forces during the Cold War era. It was equipped with nose-mounted «Izoumroud» radar, two 37 mm cannons and 50 mm air-to-air rockets. Introducing the engines-under-wing design, it gave birth to a large series of modifications culminating in the YAK-28 interceptor. In 1954 - 1957 473 aircraft were produced of which only two remain including one in Monino museum.
